The Epic genomics module brings structured data to one of the most popular electronic medical record (EMR) systems in the world. This finally provides a place to store discrete molecular data instead of relying on PDFs and faxes to review patient results. It allows data to be searchable and useful.

Once the module is up and running, there are a few considerations:

  • Importing discrete molecular data may require additional development

  • Importing data from different sources results in values that are different, but which mean the same thing

  • The search interface is limited

  • There is a need for tools to work with a large amount of data which is naturally messy

In particular, there is a need for:

  • Pre-built import integrations to import data from a large number of molecular data vendors and sources, with the ability to easily build new data imports and integrations as institutional needs change

  • Data ontologies, merging, synonyms, and other tools to easily (or automatically) clean-up messy and inconsistent data

  • Search capabilities that are robust, flexible, and fast

Frameshift MRT has been the tool of choice to extend EMR systems’ native capability to store raw genomic data.
